Programs For Families

For Adults
The Center offers adult-oriented educational programming, some occurring each month, others only periodically. Generally, these topics are suitable for children 12 years or older (all children must be accompanied by an adult). Feel free to call the Center and inquire if a particular program is right for your child. Consult our calendar or contact us for more information on adult programming.

The Great Weedon Bird Quest
Offered seasonally - check our calendar for next Quest
Education Services Staff and Volunteers, Environmental Lands Division
Come and join us on a quest to find Weedon Island Preserve birds! Learn the identifying marks and behaviors of our feathered year-round residents and seasonal visitors, while helping us compile an annual checklist of the Preserve's birds. These hikes are designed to take advantage of all levels of birding experience. Binoculars and bird guides are available. Check our calendar for the next hike. Please join us for a relaxing morning outing led by experienced birders. Call us for more information and to register. This event is free and open to the public. Recommended for adults.

History Mound Hike
Offered periodically - check our calendar for dates and times

Education Services Staff and Volunteers, Environmental Lands Division
Trained volunteers interpret the early prehistory of shell mounds and discuss the colorful, recent history of Weedon Island Preserve. This half-mile hiking trail is a recent addition to the Preserve’s trail system, and provides excellent educational opportunities as it combines the beauty of several seldom-seen natural communities with the Preserve’s rich cultural heritage.  Half of the trail provides visitors a close-up view of scrubby flatwoods, xeric hammock, and shell mound communities - areas previously inaccessible to the public.  On the other half, hikers follow the footsteps of others along a road created in the 1930s. This event is free and open to the public. Recommended for adults and children ages 8 and up.
