History Mound Hike
Offered periodically - check our calendar for dates and times
Education Services Staff and Volunteers, Environmental Lands Division
Trained volunteers interpret the early prehistory of shell mounds and discuss the colorful, recent history of Weedon Island Preserve. This half-mile hiking trail is a recent addition to the Preserve’s trail system, and provides excellent educational opportunities as it combines the beauty of several seldom-seen natural communities with the Preserve’s rich cultural heritage. Half of the trail provides visitors a close-up view of scrubby flatwoods, xeric hammock, and shell mound communities - areas previously inaccessible to the public. On the other half, hikers follow the footsteps of others along a road created in the 1930s. This event is free and open to the public. Recommended for adults and children ages 8 and up.
