Archaeology Lab

Ever wonder what archaeologists do with all that stuff they dig up at archaeological sites once the fieldwork is finished? At the Florida Public Archaeology Network Volunteer Lab, you can come find out for yourself! Learn all about how artifacts and other archaeological material get processed in the laboratory so that we can use them to learn about the past. You will get the chance to sort through, identify, and wash artifacts and other material from real archaeological sites! All ages are welcome to participate or observe, children 12 and under should be accompanied by an adult.

Archaeology Academy

Archaeology Academy at Weedon Island Preserve engages the public through presentations and hands on activities. Come learn about the prehistoric people who made Weedon Island home. After the free presentations, tour Weedon Island by canoe, hike to an archaeological site, practice laboratory methods that archaeologists use, or tour the Preserve and learn all about the plants Native Americans used in everyday life. Fee for each activity is $10.00 per participant and registration is required. Recommended for all ages. Annual Gopher Weedon Trail Run

The Annual Gopher Weedon Trail Run sponsored by FOWI is an exciting 8 k race through coastal uplands at Weedon Island. Tired of pounding the pavement on the same ole’ 5K race course? Go-pher something different and enjoy natural trails through one of Tampa Bay’s hidden gems! The Gopher Weedon trail run will take runners and walkers along a journey through native Florida habitats, including gorgeous views of Tampa Bay.

This program is designed to introduce pre-school children to the wonders of the natural and cultural world. Every second and fourth Thursday of each month, children are treated to a variety of stories and hands-on activities that connect them to their environment. This activity is recommended for ages 3 to 5. Reservations required
